Is your camera compatible? basically it needs to output a 'clean' output with no control data to be usable - same issue as recording from the HDMI output of the camera. Most cameras will work its just whether yours gives an odd aspect ratio or shows recording data on screen. The newer the camera the more likely it is to work.
