topic icon Cannibal! The Musical Restoration Complete

We have finished the post-production work on the comedy-horror film Cannibal! The Musical and the HD up res has been signed off by Trey Parker, so it's all systems go to start on the Blu-ray authoring for Liam Regan of Refuse Films. The Blu-ray is scheduled for release at the end of 2024 and will feature the main film along with a vast array of extra features (hours and hours!)

We have been removing (a lot of !) dust and scratches from the master digital files using Davinci Resolve plugins, as well as cleaning up edges of frame and transitions between shots. As we discussed in our first article on Cannibal! restoration, the original 16mm film was lost, and so we have been working with the digital files that exist. We have synced up audio and then created an HD 4:3  (letterboxed) master to use as the basis of the Blu-ray.

New 4-3 Troma Leader up ressed and cleanup up

We have added a 4:3 Troma film leader that we have painstakingly fixed up and also sharpened up the front titles with font matching and subtle overlaying to make them more legible. We have matched in a re-built Cannibal logo at the start of the film too, and performed an amount of rotoscoping to help clean-up the effect of the HD up-res on certain colours (Reds mostly). The Indian Chiefs bead necklace and Alfred Packers Neck scarf got the rotoscope plus colour blur treatment in many shots. The SD digital master was quite noisy especially in the night scenes, and we had to manually manage the noise reduction on each shot to avoid going too harsh. We also added film grain back in to help with the look of the film. Liam Regan had a lot of input into areas he wanted improving so we worked on a timecode based shot list as the restoration progressed.
