CD duplication services borth devon

March 2014 - CD duplication for Far North District

Local band Far North District, have just finished recording their new 4 track EP and needed to quickly produce a number of copies before the launch party.
Tony from the band contacted us a week before the launch. He had already designed artwork for the cover and disk and after a quick chat he decided to go with a printed cardboard wallet for the album.
We were easily able to get the CD's completed in time (despite a quick cover re-design to fit the new wallet format) and the launch party was a success.
Update: Since writing this the band have returned for more copies having sold out of the 1st batch. Let's hope that they keep selling well in preparation for a full album!

4K promo film grading & rotoscoping

March 2014 - Colour grade and rotoscoping for Atramentum 4K edit

Local photographer & filmmaker, Christopher Lane, has asked us again to work on the colour grading for a 4K (Ultra High Definition) edit.
The video is a promotional piece for use on his showreel and takes the form of a fictitious skin-care brand advert. The piece was edited on Avid by a film editor and then passed to us for grading.

As well as the grade which was carried out by mark, Stu also had to carry out some Rotoscoping work on two clips. In these clips the model is looking at the camera while sat in a bath, suggesting nudity. However the model's bra was showing against the side of her breast and Stu had to remove the offending item frame by frame.
The final video can be seen now on Vimeo on on Chris' website

Promotional & corporate film production

March 2014 - new promotional film for Blue Fizz Events

Based in North Devon, Blue Fizz Events are a bespoke events management company.
Managing director Tracy got in touch with us to help with a short promo film that was to be used for a competition entry. The competition was to discover the best local companies in Devon and she needed to showcase Blue Fizz in the best way possible.
We had a tight deadline, with just 3 days to film and edit the piece. Stu filmed Tracy's piece to camera at Broomhill Art Gardens on Monday & edited the film including a number of still image over lays on Tuesday & Weds and it was submitted in time for the Weds evening deadline!
Update: Blue Fizz was shortlisted for an award but sadly did not win. However Tracy is very with the level of exposure that the entry has given the company in South Devon and we will soon be re-editing the film for use on their website.

February 2014 - Mark Daniels - Ultimate Bublé - music video

Maniac Films have been working on stage with professional Michael Bublé tribute act Mark Daniels. He regularly performs across the southwest as Ultimate Bublé.
Mark wanted a slick, professional promotional music video that showcased his talents in a way that Bublé himself would be proud of!
We hired the local Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe, making use of the stage and full lighting rig on the 1st day and using the dressing rooms for the opening scenes of the video on the 2nd day. The film was shot on a mix of DSLR and the Sony PMW-200 and we also had an opportunity to use the Jib on stage.
The video was an instant success with Mark securing a number of gigs within the 1st few days after posting it online - each customer stating that they saw the video and HAD to book him!

ECombat website re-build and design

January 2014 - The new ECombat website goes live

Over the last couple of months we have been completely re-designing and re-vamping the website for ECombat, worldwide suppliers of laser tag gaming equipment.
The website had to reflect their brand, stepping away from the old design which was cluttered and difficult to navigate. A new logo and look was designed by graphic designer Chris Barrett and website layout/user journeys were designed by Phil Saunders. Here at Maniac we took the design layouts and graphics from Phil & Chris and re-worked the webite to make them fit in as well as adding a lot of new features and functions required by the client.
Paul at ECombat is very happy with the finished site and has received a lot of positive feedback from clients. We will be assisting in some ongoing work including translation of the entire site into multiple languages

Video montage filming for masquerade ball

November 2013 - Masquerade ball video montage for Blue Fizz Events

Blue Fizz Events in North Devon provide bespoke event s management. recently they contacted us to help out with a Venetian Masked Ball Christmas Party that they were organising for a corporate client.
Tracey from Blue Fizz needed a video montage of Venetian ball masks which was to be shown on screens and the event. She delivered a crate of masks to the Maniac office along with fabric that would be used at the event as art of the colour scheme.
We spent an entertaining afternoon suspending masks from the ceiling, with Mark working the camera while Stu created a range of lighting effects to add more movement to the ''fly-by'' shots. Tracey said "The event was a huge success and thanks once again for getting involved".

November 2013 - Live filming and vision mixing for Bridgwater Carnival

in 2013 we returned to Bridgwater Carnival, the largest illuminated procession in Britain, to provide live filming & vision mixing for the big screen in the centre of town.
We again asked to provide cameras and crew to film the parade and broadcast the footage onto a huge screen. We also displayed footage of bands playing on the stage and of the crowds throughout the day in the run-up to the big event.
We filmed using three cameras, one of which was a wireless roaming camera that we sent out onto the high street to capture the street performers
On location were Mark, Stu, Matt and Phil with Mark operating the mixing desk from the OB van. Light rain throughout the day couldn't put off the huge crowds.
The organisers were very pleased with the result and we hope to be back again next year!.

Teranex format converter now in use at Maniac Films

September 2013 - New Teranex 2D video processor installed for realtime standards conversion

As part of our DVD authoring service, we spend a lot of time converting existing films from NTSC to PAL and vice versa. This can be very time consuming (especially on full HD 4 hour long programmes like the TT2013 Blu-ray!)
Enter the Black Magic Teranex 2D. This unit promises to provide standards conversion, noise reduction, de-interlacing, up and down conversion and more all in real-time. It has been used by major broadcasters so it can't be bad. The Teranex will substantially speed up our conversion times which will be passed on to our clients with shorter lead times - fantastic!

September 2013 - Promo shoot for Paignton Zoo at Exeter Chiefs Stadium

The shoot was organised by Cineon Productions from Exeter and the video was being filmed for a new ident for Paignton Zoo and Maniac were there to provide kit hire and crew for the shoot. We were using the Porta-Jib and took the opportunity to use the new remote follow focus and Teradek wireless video sender. mark was mightily impressed with the remote focus unit and can't wait to use it more often!

Multi-language DVD and Blu-ray authoring and replication

September 2013 - Additional Blu-ray & DVD authoring of TT 2013 with German audio.

Having successfully completed the 2013 version of the Isle of Man TT event on Blu-Ray, we were approached by a German distributor to re-author the Blu-ray and also create a new DVD version that included a German language audio option.
The biggest challenge was re-timing all of the audio, which had been recorded in Germany to match the 25p DVD version, but was out of time when added to the 24p Blu-Ray version.

The job was a last minute request and we managed to turn it around in a day - getting the files off to the replication house in Germany in record time..

Equipment hire for Indian Summer the film

July 2013 - Equipment hire for shooting of 'Indian Summer' in North Devon.

We were contacted by Hettie, the producer of a new short film from Old Rectory Pictures being shot in North Devon called Indian Summer.
Shot mainly in and around Westward Ho! the film is described as "A politically incorrect love story featuring knights, burning arrows, conkers & blackmailing dog walkers.".

For the main shoot the crew only required a production monitor and a greenscreen, having procured most equipment from London. However on the pickup shoot later in the month we also supplied lighting equipment to shoot a scene in a cinema.
The film was mostly funded through a kickstarter project with the rest put in by the director, Toby Lomas & producer Hettie.

Promotional filming for the Re-track kickstarter project

July 2013 - Promotional filming for Re-Track kickstarter project

Monday morning and we found ourselves stood on a blustery hilltop in Bristol. We were at Ashton Court to meet up with Simon Fowler, the creator of Re-Track and David Smee.
Re-Track is a system for mountain biking that tracks your route using a sensor and records it to your smartphone. This is then uploaded the Re-track server where it will be processed and you can see re-watch your ride complete with statistics
Simon came up with the idea when he became fed-up with trying to describe the trails that he had ridden and decided to develop his own system.
The promotional film will be used on the Kickstarter website, where Simon hopes to raise capital to develop the sensor & move the processing from his laptop to an online server.
We shot the video using the Sony PMW-200 and 2x GoPro 3 cameras which were used on head & chest mounts and even a pole on the bike giving a birds eye view of the rider.

Editing training for local surfer

July 2013 - Edit training for Surfing at 70 film

James Davis is a local surfer. Now there's nothing unusual in that...there are hundreds of surfers in the area. But where James differs is that he is 70 years old and still surfing!
James has been filming himself with GoPro cameras and the assistance of local videographer Richard Gregory with an aim to making a short film about surfing in his 70's.

However despite having worked a a photographer for years, James has never edited a film so we have been giving him a couple of introductory lessons in how to cut, splice, synch, title and grade a film. As well as teaching we have also assisted in converting his GoPro footage to a file format that works natively with his editing software.
James is now completing the edit at home and we look forward to seeing the final product.

BLURAY authoring in north Devon

July 2013 - DVD & Blu-ray authoring and Russian subtitling for Picture Perfect.

We have been working the DVD & Blu-ray authoring for Picture Perfect a new short film by Irina Izmestieva.
The film centers around a grumpy pensioner who, after moving to live near his sister, finds an old painting in a car boot sale. This starts a chain of events that bring back memories of pain and love.
We were given the original film in both PAL & NTSC formats. From this we created menus which were incorporated into DVD & Blu-ray versions.
Both versions were created in PAL & NTSC formats and included Russian subtitling which we had to time to the English dialogue (not easy when you don't speak or read Russian!!)

We had to get the 1st version done really quickly in time for submission to a Russian Film Festival but it was worth it as the film won Irina the Best Director award at the Kharkov Lilac Film Festival!

Promotional video fro the PEEP programme

June 2013 - Interview filming in Bideford for the PEEP programme

Stu & Charli have spent the morning filming at Halsannery near of Bideford.
We were there to interview children from 3 local secondary schools who have been taking part in the P.E.E.P (Pupil & Employer Engagement Programme) which aims to introduce students to working life, allowing them to experience different careers and speak to employers.
We were on a tight time limit so we set-up a large diffuser panel to shade the students. This allowed us to keep the lighting steady as the sun moved across the sky.
Our brief was to create a short film for each school, documenting the students opinions, stories and best bits of the programme.
After a very quick turnaround we have received fantastic feedback from Sarah Grigg at North Devon + who liased with us throughout the project and they films will soon appear on the PEEP blog for all to see

See the DaVinci workflow in action

May 2013 - Colour grade and edit test on 4K using DaVinci Resolve

A local filmmaker, Christopher Lane, contacted us recently for some help with grading a test shoot that he had shot in 4K on a Red Scarlet camera.
The test shoot was set up as a series of camera and lighting tests with a editing workflow tests to follow. At Maniac this was a first opportunity to work with DaVinci Resolve, 4K video and Final Cut X.

We faced a few challenges at first...we had to send our grading monitor to Germany for colour calibration, we had to invest in a new Decklink card to make DaVinci output the correct colours to the grading monitor and there are also a few bugs exporting footage from Final Cut to DaVinci.
However we persevered and our grading suite is now fully functioning and ready for any eventuality.
The footage was shot at Holborn Studios, Directed by Christopher Lane & the D.O.P. was James Layton. It starred Emma G with hair by Craig David & make up by Dani Guinsberg

New Genesis website design by Maniac Films

March 2013 - Major redesign of complete

Wxe have just completed a major website facelift for Ilfracombe based online surf store Genesis Surf Shop. The site was looking dated and cluttered so the owners asked us to create a new layout.

Users should instantly find the site easier. The old layout used side columns full of adverts and categories that was confused and cluttered. The new design utilised a drop-down menu that is not only cleaner, but easier to navigate. We also improved the search feature so that the site now finds your products a lot faster.
The main brief was that the site should look more minimal, but without losing functionality for the customer. We and the owners of Genesis are happy with the finished result and so far Facebook feedback has been positive!

March 2013 - New website goes live

Our IT apprentice Barnaby has completed his first full project since starting work with us in February!
Trail Ferret is a website for local man Ben, who arranges training and trail running events in the local area. Ben asked us to build him a site to promote his business, a site that also had to give customers the opportunity to book places on courses as well.

Barnaby built the site from scratch using coding skills that he had learnt at school and in his own time. However he also had to learn a lot of new tricks which included his 1st ever experience with integrating Paypal into a booking form!
Ben is really happy with the new site and Barnaby is currently builing a custom data entry page so that Ben can update his site from home while also posting news updates directly to Twitter whenever he updates the website.

The article looks at colour grading processes in Final Cut Pro and compares them to the same processes in Da Vinci, ultimately demonstrating that Da Vinci is the superior tool as long as you don't mind spending money on some new gear.

Battlefield Sim valve test

January 2013 - Inflatable wall promo filming for Battlefield Sim

We have been back to Battlefield Sim to film a new piece to promote their Inflatable Training Walls.
The walls have recently been upgraded with an improved pressure release valve and the guys at Battlefield wanted to demonstrate this important feature. In order to do this we used an air compressor and talc to show the air release as a visual.
Stu took the opportunity to try out our new Sony PMW-200 camera for the shoot and it worked perfectly. The video has been posted up on the company website for viewing by registered clients

Conference and training films for BP

January 2013 - Conference filming, workshop filming & highlight videos for BP

We have just spent 4 days in London with BP. We were contacted by North Devon based Tinder-Box who were organising the conference for BP.
Our first job saw us spending 2 days at the BP Faculty conference, filming interviews and highlights which were editing on location to be shown later in the conference.
Before the event we also edited a number of iPhone videos together to create 3 promo videos that were shown on the 1st day.
After the conference we moved down the road to Fleet Street to film 2 days of masterclass workshops for BP staff trainers. These films will be edited and shown on the BP training website.
It was a long 4 days but well worth it for the chance to work with an International leader in Business like BP.

Promotional film for Anthony

January 2013 - Location filming with Anthony for US university scholarship

We have been braving the elements on the greens at the Royal North Devon Golf Club in Westward Ho!
We were there to film Anthony, a promising young golfing talent who has been offered a number of exciting scholarships at US Universities - the only problem is that they need to see footage of Anthony playing a few rounds.
We spent an afternoon out on the course where we filmed him playing 3 holes followed by recording a series of voiceovers and the introduction to the film. We returned a few days later to film Anthony on the driving range where he showed his prowess with a number of different clubs. The final film was uploaded onto Youtube so that the link could be quickly e-mailed to the right people.
Good luck Anthony - we hope you get the scholarship you deserve!

Promotional film for Seb in north devon

January 2013 - Entrepreneur First promo film for Seb

Wow this was an interesting challenge. We were contacted by Seb who had applied for the Entrepreneur First programme. In order to make his application stand out he wanted to make a short film in a similar style to the Old Spice ads a few years ago.
The aim was to create a seamless film that would take the viewers on a journey through different locations while he informed us of his merits and why he should be picked as a candidate.
The journey took us from an office, to playing chess on a beach and ended up with Seb sat on a horse in space! It was a really challenging shoot to put together and had to be filmed and edited in just 3 days! Especially when the 1st day involved setting up a green screen in a stable with a temperamental horse!

January 2013 - Maniac Films celebrate 10 years of film making

So how do we plan to celebrate? By doing it all again! We are expanding the business by taking on two new apprentices in January and February and we will continue to provide the same high quality services that we have always done!

January will also see the arrival of a new deputy managing director (aka the birth of Mark's first son) which will kick-start what we hope will be a great year!
